Walk into any shop or scroll any seller’s page and you will see the same words: tote, handbag, shoulder bag, crossbody. They are not just fashion terms. Each shape is built for a different kind of day, and choosing the right one makes the difference between a bag you love and a bag that sits in the wardrobe.
Here is how each style works, who it suits, and how to choose.
In this guide
1. The tote bag
A tote is a roomy, open-topped bag with two handles long enough to carry on the shoulder. It is the workhorse of bags: files, a water bottle, a power bank, your purse and a light jacket all fit with room to spare.
- Best for: work, school runs, market days and anyone who carries a lot.
- Look for: a structured body so it stands up, a closure (a turn-lock, snap or zip) to keep things secure, and inside pockets so small items do not disappear at the bottom.
- Watch out for: very soft, unstructured totes, which can sag and look untidy when they are full.
Our Grace Turn-Lock Tote is a classic structured work tote: firm sides, a gold-tone turn-lock and buckled handles that sit on the shoulder.

2. The handbag (top-handle bag)
A handbag, or top-handle bag, is carried in the hand or the crook of the arm. Its shorter handles give it a more formal, polished look.
- Best for: meetings, church, weddings and events where you want to look put together.
- Look for: handles fixed with stitching and metal fittings, because all the weight hangs from them.
- Watch out for: carrying a heavy handbag for a long time. It is elegant, but not made for a long walk or a crowded trotro.
3. The shoulder bag
A shoulder bag has a single strap or a pair of handles long enough to sit comfortably on the shoulder, leaving both hands free. Many totes are also shoulder bags.
- Best for: busy days on the move, when you need your hands free for your phone, shopping or children.
- Look for: a strap wide enough not to dig into your shoulder, and an adjustable length.
4. The crossbody bag
A crossbody bag has a long strap worn diagonally across the body, so the bag sits on the opposite hip. It is the most secure way to carry a bag in a crowd, because it stays close to your body and in front of you.
- Best for: markets, travel, public transport and busy events.
- Look for: a strong, adjustable strap with solid clasps, since the whole weight of the bag hangs from them.

The best of both: a tote with a detachable strap
If you cannot decide, choose a bag that does more than one job. A tote with a detachable, adjustable strap can be carried by its handles into the office, then switched to the shoulder or across the body for the journey home. That is exactly how our Strand Tote is designed: brown tab handles with gold studs, plus a detachable strap with gold-tone clasps.
5. Which one suits your day?
| Your day | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Office work with files and a laptop sleeve | Structured tote |
| Long commute by trotro or on foot | Tote with a detachable strap, or a shoulder bag |
| Church, weddings and formal events | Handbag, or a neat structured tote |
| Market runs and busy crowds | Crossbody bag |
| One bag for everything | Tote with a detachable strap |
How to carry a bag without shoulder pain
Whatever style you choose, how you carry it matters just as much. A heavy bag carried the wrong way, every day, can leave your neck and shoulders aching.
- Lighten the load. Once a week, empty your bag and take out anything you have not used: old receipts, extra chargers, the third lip balm.
- Switch sides. If you carry a tote or shoulder bag, swap shoulders every so often instead of always using the same one.
- Go crossbody for long walks. A strap across the body spreads the weight over your back and keeps the bag close, which is easier on the shoulder for long distances.
- Adjust the strap. A crossbody bag should sit at hip level, not bounce against your thigh. A shoulder strap should let the bag sit just above your hip.
- Put heavy things at the bottom. A water bottle or power bank at the base, near your body, keeps the bag balanced.
This is one more reason a tote with a detachable strap is such a good everyday choice: you can change how you carry it as your day changes.
Questions we are often asked
What is the difference between a tote and a handbag?
A tote is larger and open-topped, with handles long enough for the shoulder. A handbag is usually smaller and more formal, with shorter handles carried in the hand or on the arm.
Is a crossbody bag safer?
Usually, yes. Because the strap goes across your body and the bag sits in front of you, it is harder to snatch and easier to keep an eye on in a crowd.
Can one bag work for both work and weekends?
Yes, if you choose a neutral colour and a tote with a detachable strap. Carry it by hand for work and wear it crossbody at the weekend.
Which colour should my first bag be?
Black, brown or taupe go with almost everything. Burgundy is a rich colour that still works like a neutral. Read our guide to choosing a work bag for more.
