How to Choose a Work Bag That Lasts in Ghana

A work bag in Ghana has a harder life than most. It rides in trotros and taxis, sits on office floors, survives harmattan dust and the first heavy rains of the season, and still has to look smart when you walk into a meeting. Many bags look good on day one and start failing by month three: a strap pulls loose, the lining tears, the gold hardware turns dull.

This guide shows you what to check before you buy, so your next work bag lasts for years, not weeks.

1. Choose the right size first

Before you think about colour or style, list what you carry on a normal workday: purse, phone, power bank, charger, documents in an A4 folder, a water bottle, maybe a small umbrella. A work tote needs room for all of it without bulging.

As a rough guide:

  • About 30–33 cm wide holds A4 files flat and still looks neat.
  • At least 11–12 cm deep stops the bag from bulging when it is full.
  • About 28–30 cm high keeps tall items like bottles inside.

Our Grace Turn-Lock Tote is 33 × 12 × 30 cm, and the Strand Tote is 31 × 11 × 28 cm, so both take a full workday’s worth of things.

2. Pick a shape that stays smart

A structured bag, one with firm sides, stands up on its own. It looks sharper on a desk or office floor, protects what is inside, and keeps its shape even when half empty. A slouchy bag can look relaxed and stylish at the weekend, but it often looks tired by the end of a long working week.

For the office, church or meetings with clients, choose a structured tote or a handbag with a firm base. Keep the soft, slouchy styles for weekends.

3. Five quality checks before you pay

These are the things a photo cannot show you. Check them in person, or ask the seller for close-up photos or a short video on WhatsApp.

  1. Stitching. Look at where the handles meet the bag. The stitches should be small, even and tight, with no loose threads. Gently pull the handle: nothing should move.
  2. Handles and straps. Handles should be attached in more than one place, ideally with stitching and a metal fitting. A single row of stitching on a heavy bag will pull loose.
  3. Lining. Open the bag. The lining should be stitched neatly all round, with no gaps at the corners. Inside pockets help you find your phone and keys quickly.
  4. Hardware. Buckles, clasps and turn-locks should feel solid and close firmly. Lightweight, hollow-feeling hardware often scratches and loses its colour quickly.
  5. Edges. Run a finger along the edges of the straps and the bag. They should be smooth and sealed, not rough or peeling.

At Karis Tresses, every bag goes through these checks by hand before it leaves our shop in Ashaiman. If you are buying anywhere else, ask the seller to show you each one.

4. Think about how you carry it

How do you travel to work? If you walk, stand in a trotro or carry a laptop, a bag that only has short handles can tire your arm and shoulder. A detachable shoulder strap gives you options: carry it by hand into the office, then switch to the shoulder or across the body for the journey home.

That is why the Strand Tote comes with a detachable, adjustable strap with gold-tone clasps, while the Grace Tote has longer buckled handles that sit comfortably on the shoulder.

5. Pick a colour that works with everything

If this is your only work bag, choose a colour that goes with most of your clothes:

  • Black goes with everything and hides marks best.
  • Brown and taupe look warm and polished with navy, white, cream and earth tones.
  • Burgundy is a rich colour that still behaves like a neutral, and lifts plain black or navy outfits.
  • Blush, teal and petrol blue are lovely second bags once you have a neutral one.

Light colours show dust and transfer from dark clothes sooner, so they need a little more care in harmattan season.

6. What a good work bag should cost

A very cheap bag often costs more in the end, because you replace it two or three times a year. A good everyday work tote does not need a designer price, but it should pass the five checks above. Our work totes are ₵240 and ₵260, with delivery across Ghana, free pickup at our shop in Ashaiman, and the option to pay on delivery.

Questions we are often asked

Can a work bag carry a laptop?

It depends on the laptop and the bag. Measure your laptop (or its sleeve) and compare it with the bag’s inside width and height before you buy. If you carry a laptop every day, choose a structured bag with a firm base so the weight sits evenly, and avoid overfilling the bag on top of it.

How many work bags do I really need?

One good neutral bag is enough to start. When you are ready for a second, choose a colour that changes the feel of your outfits, such as burgundy or teal, so the two bags cover different moods.

How do I keep my bag looking new?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, keep it out of direct sun, and store it stuffed with paper so it keeps its shape. Do not leave it on a wet floor or in a hot car.

Can I see the bag before I buy?

Yes. Visit us at Kuffuor Station, opposite New Crystal Hospital, Ashaiman, or ask us on WhatsApp for extra photos and a short video of any bag.

The short version

  • Choose a structured shape for work.
  • Check the stitching, handles, lining, hardware and edges before you pay.
  • Get a shoulder strap if you commute.
  • Start with black, brown, taupe or burgundy.
